Concessions
Keep in mind that my assessment is anecdotal and generally based on a single game experience. In general, food at amateur & semi-pro venues is very good and affordable. Northwoods League, American Association, and Minor League venues is generally good, but more expensive. Not all teams offer a concession stand.
Also be mindful that I’ve been to each of the Northwoods, Independent, and Midwest League ballparks, but I’ve only been to ~60 amateur / semi-pro ballparks and those are concentrated in the southeast quadrant of the state.
With that said, there were a couple venues with burgers and brats that were pretty bad. More than one brat was tossed after a bite or two. But, I am not going to call out those experiences because I may have had a single bad experience.
Best Food Overall
- The Rome Raiders offer excellent brats and great burgers. Both are nicely grilled; the brats have a nice crunch, and burgers have a wonderful char. Hat’s off to the guy manning the grill!
Best Brats
Three ballfields stand out. They are not in a particular order.
- Again, the Rome Raiders cook a great brat.
- I am not sure of the brand name, but the Sussex Cardinals‘ brats are grilled very nicely and have a touch of spice that was excellent.
- As I was leaving a Footville Outlaws game, I grabbed a brat “for the road”. I was a couple miles down the road before I took my first bite. The long drive home was the only reason I didn’t turn around and buy a second one. Their brat is
outstanding. . . but also different than the rest. Whereas Rome, Sussex, and most others are grilled, Footville’s brats are cooked in a way that they simply melt in your mouth. Their brats remind me of the Italian sausages you can buy at Jimmy’s Grotto in Waukesha.
Best Hamburgers
- Genesee Rebels offer the best hamburger. I took the time to compliment the guy doing the grilling. I went to several games and always had at least two. They were that good.
- As mentioned above, The Rome Raiders offer a great burger.
Best Variety with Decent Food
Ballclubs of the Northwoods League, Independent League, and Midwest Leagues offer more variety than amateur & semi-pro ballfields.
- The Madison Mallards offer many different vendors and food options.
- I don’t think The Milwaukee Milkmen have different vendors, but they do offer a decent amount of variety.
Best Prices
As a litmus test, amateur and semi-pro venues offer a brat and soda for $4 – $7. Expect the other venues to have prices that are nearly double or more.
