The Clyman Canners won their home opener of the regular season by edging out the visiting Johnson Creek Pioneers by a score of 2-1. The Canners were led by Brock Vredeveld’s solid complete game pitching performance that included 120 pitches, 4 hits and 3 walks.
Johnson Creek got their only run of the game in the top of the first when Bow Hartwig, who was hit with the third pitch of the game, advanced on a single and scored on a ground out. Hartwig led the Pioneers hitting by adding a walk to his at bats for the day.
In the fourth, Clyman tied the score when Bryce Schuett, who was hit by a pitch to start the inning, scored on a fielder’s choice. In the bottom of the 7th, shortstop Clint Rose led off the inning with a double and then later scored after a single, a walk, and a fielder’s choice.
Two innings later the game ended with a defensive gem by shortstop Clint Rose who snagged a would be hit at the edge of the outfield grass and rifled a throw across to the outstretched first baseman, Brady Martin.
Sidenote: I was disappointed that I failed to get aerial photos of the game. Moments after starting up the drone, the controller alarmed, indicating the contrioller lacked a sufficient charge. I’ll just have to come back for at least one more game.
