The first game of the day was a visit to East Troy for a noon start against Merton.
I am a sucker for ballfields with some nostalgia and the wooden grandstand provides that aire in East Troy. I remember going to a couple games last year and I looked forward to coming down to get a couple aerial photos in 2026. Interesstingly, in my persuit of Wisconsin baseball memorabilia, I recall seeing a photo of an east coast ballfield with a stikingly similar grandstand.
Anyhow, East Troy jumped out to a quick lead. By the end of the 3rd, the Express were ahead 6-0. Merton would add a single run in the top of the 4th and East Troy added two more in the bottom half. In the top of the fifth, the Amvets nibbled away at their deficit by adding a run. But after 5 1/2, the score was 8-2. Actually, that would be the end of East Troy’s scoring, but it was just enough.
Merton tacked on 3 runs in the 7th, and left the based loaded as the third out was made. Merton got within a run of tying the game when they score two more in the 8th. But, East Troy pitcher, Bryce Backus retired the side in order to asecure a victory of the Express.
The field of play was a little clumsy for both teams as Merton committed 3 errors and East Troy had four. From the mound, Merton only gave up four walks, but also did not record a single strikeout. Meanwhile, East Troy’s pitching managed 12 K’s, but also gave Merton lots of baserunners with 10 walks.
At the dish, Merton made the most of their six hits with 2 doubles and a home. Three players, Tyler LaMack(1B,HR), Bob Tilot(1B,2B), and Alex Tanke(1B,2B) collected all the hits, while Bryce Toussaint went hitless but walked and scored three times.
Conversely, East Troy’s hitting attack was more balanced. Standouts included Mason Mitacek’s three singles and Aben Beinlich’s three doubles. Bryce Backus and Luke Blaha added a pair of singles and Noah Taylor had a triple.
