In a Saturday morning matchup in Johnson Creek, the Waukesha Foxes faced off against the Johnson Creek Mapaches. In a season opener 11 days earlier the Foxes suffered defeat at the hands of the first year Madison Hoots, so I was looking forward to seeing a better performance. It was a well played game.
In the end, the Foxes held off the Mapaches and came away with a 6-4 victory. It wasn’t easy as the score bounced back and forth a few times.
Johnson Creek got the scoring started with a two-run homer by first baseman Mack Endres. Waukesha tied the score in the bottom half of the frame on a pair of singles and several miscues that included a pair of errors and a HBP.
In the bottom of the 3rd, the Foxes took the lead on a pair of walks and a single. The threat ended on a strikeout, fly out, and a ground out.
The Mapaches evened things up in the top of the 4th on an error that scored after two singles. In the bottom of the 4th, the Foxes flexed a little muscle and plated three runs on a double, walk, single, and another double.
Thereafter, pitching on both sides settled in. Waukesha was held scoreless. The Mapaches scored one more run in the top of the 7th after a HBP, two singles, and another walk. With the bases loaded and no outs the Foxes avoided further damage by inducing a fly out, fielders choice, and a line out.
Mapache standouts include Niko Frangopopoulos with two hits (single, double) and a run scored, Mack Endres with two hits (single, homer) two RBIs and a run scored, and Peyton Poker with two singles.
Waukesha hit leaders included Crete Slattery with a single and two doubles, and three RBIs. Darian Pretorius added a pair of doubles and one runs scored. And, Nate Lang added a single and a double, and an RBI and two runs scored.
Conditions for photography were great; late morning light or bright overcast skies are ideal. It also doesn’t hurt that uniforms were bright orange or bright red. I am so glad there were no road gray uniforms, which are generally pretty dull.
