The morning matchup in the first of two between the visiting Waterford Rivermen and Dousman Frogs was a great, well-pitched game.
Rivermen pitcher Matt O’Sullivan was dissecting the Frogs batters in the early innings with 9 Ks in the first four innings. The Frogs threatened in the bottom of the 3rd when when a walk and sharply hit double to right put runners and 2nd and 3rd. Dousman got on the board in the bottom of the fifth after a one-out double followed by a pair of singles. The next batter managed a walk, but not before the 2nd out was recorded on a stolen base attempt. A fly out to center ended the threat. In the 6th and 7th innings, the Frogs managed a single, but O’Sullivan’s control on the mound kept Dousman from scoring any more runs.
Dousman pitcher, Andrew Muffler has a similarly impressive outing, but the outcome was overshadowed by a few fielding miscues that led to the run differential. The Rivermen’s first run was made the Pat Murphy way – manufactured. In the top of the 2nd, a one-out single followed by a stolen base by Nick Uhen led to the first run when Mike Schmidt singled to right.
Waterford extended their lead in the top of the 4th. A single followed by a fielder’s choice exchanged the base runner at first. A Dousman error put runners on the corner, and then a second error of the inning led to a run. The next batter singled to left to score the third and final Rivermen run.
In the fifth and sixth innings, Waterford threatened with more scoring but double plays ended those threats.
Final score (game 1) Waterford 3 – Dousman 1
Notable hitting from Waterford include a pair of singles from Tyler Swanson and Ben Korman, a single and double with 2 runs scored by Nick Uhen, and a single that scored 2 by Mike Schmidt. On the Dousman side of the offense, Cooper Pease and Tylson Walz supplied extra base hits in the form of doubles, and Dylan Pease had a pair of singles and an RBI.
All in all, it was a good game. I can’t say I feel the same way about my photography for hte game. I’m disappointed and owe Dousman and Waterford better. The cloudy skies required bumping up the ISO and that led to grainy images, and lower shutter speeds that failed to stop action the way I want. I did like some of the expressions captured on players’ faces though.
