Friday action is generally a little sparse in this area so choices were not many. With that said, I being impressed with one of Monona’s pitcher last year, and I was hoping he would be throwing for this game. He did! And, It was an added bonus seeing the Granit Jaxx team for the first.
It was a good game to watch; great way to spend a Friday night. Montello got things started right away in the top of the first by scoring a pair of runs on a walk, a single, and an error. Monona posed a threat in the bottom of the first by getting two on with two out, but were unable to push any runs across.
In the top of the third, the Granite Jaxx got the bases loaded with one out, but a strikeout and fly out ended the threat. Otherwise, the first half of the game was relatively quiet for both clubs.
In the top of the 5th, with two outs, Montello got a single followed by a Curtis Morgan double to score a run. In the bottom of the 5th, the Braves scored their first run in similar fashion. With two outs, an error followed by a Dom Najacht double plated their first run.
So, after 5 the Granite Jaxx led by a 3-1 margin.
In the top of the 7th, Montello extended their lead by scoring another run on a single-double (Nate Andrews) combination.
In the bottom of the 7th, the Braves narrowed the deficit by scoring two runs on a walk and single followed by a passed ball to push runners into scoring position. Then Terek Verhage singled to score the two runners and narrow the Granite Jaxx lead to 4-3.
The lead and final score flipped in the bottom of the ninth. After a single, a sacrifice bunt and another single put runners on the corners. A ground out scored the runner from 3rd to tie the score. With two outs and a runner now at third base, Mac Vesperman delivered a single to left to score the game winning run.
Final score Monona 5 – Montello 4.
It was a nice night for shooting. Trees to the west of the infield posed a challenge by casting shadows on certain parts of the field and not others. This really plays tricks on the camera’s sensing system.
Side note: I pay attention to the uniforms. I have to. I am not fond of what have historically been called “road grays”. They are generally pretty dull. Monona wears gray pants with a dark blue jersey and cap. The uniform artwork is really cool and something I did not notice last year. On the cap, a tomahawk winds through the “M”. But, even more classy is the uniform back that contains the subtle outline of the “M and tomahawk that is overlaid with the jersey number. Unfortunately, I only have one photo where you can see the jersey’s back.
