In this Wednesday matchup between Hustisford and Thiensville-Mequon, I tried to make the best of an 8:00pm start time, overcast skies, and the haze caused by smoke from Minnesota and Canadian wildfires. I managed to get a couple innings of photography, aided by pulling out my faster 80-200mm lens.
Before the game was under way, I enjoyed a conversation with “Tom”, who was greeting people with a game schedule and offering a few minutes to chat about baseball and the history of Thiensville baseball in particular. Conversations like this with the many people I have met this season, truly add to the experience. Thanks Tom!
I also enjoyed talking briefly to the Thiensville coach, Greg Ebbert, who started playing for the Twins in 1970 – their 2nd year as the Thiensville-Mequon Twins. Unfortunately, I did not stay long enough to witness his return to the field (right field) because of an injury to the Twins’ catcher that would have otherwise left the ballclub short handed. There was an article in the Milwaukee paper, but it must have been in the online edition only because I bought a newspaper the next day just so I could read the story.
Anyhow, here’s a game summary.
In the top of the 1st, Hustisford jumped out to a 1-0 lead when the leadoff batter, Sam Roeseler led off with a single, stole 2nd, and scored on a single by cleanup hitter, Matt Mueller.
In the top of the 4th the Astros extended their lead by plating another run by playing small ball: a hit by pitch, single, and then scoring on a ground out.
In hte bottom half of the inning the Twins got on the board when the first two batters singled and advanced on a sacrifice bunt. Jonathan Wizner, who was standing on third later scored on a wild pitch.
In the bottom of the fifth, Thiensville-Mequon scored a handful and took the lead for good. With two outs, the next three batters singled. Three more batters reached base on an error, single, and double. After 5 innings, the Twins led the Astros 6-2.
In the top of the 6th, Hustisford scored their last run in the contest when Grant Ross homered to center. Not to be outdone, Theinsville’s Sam Cameranesi homered to center in the bottom half of the inning. In the bottom of the 7th the Twins added another run when a leadoff single scored on a Cole Hessler double.
Final score: Thiensville Twins 8 – Hustisford 3.
T-M’s offensive standouts include Jonathan Wizner who had three hits and three runs scored. Jimmy Doedens and Cole Hessler each collected a pair of hits and each scored a run.
Hustisford’s cleanup hitter Matt Mueller went 3-4 and leadoff batter Sam Roeseler had a pair of singles.
