For this ballgame, it was an opportunity to see Verona play for the first time this season, and still enjoy an evening game with enough sunlight to shoot much of the game. Turns out the strong evening sunlight cast some pretty dark shadows so it took a few more minutes than usual to process all the photos.
Relatively speaking, this was a really quick game that finished in less than 2 hours – albit it was a seven inning affair. An avetrage number of hits, not too many walks, and three double plays kept the game movin’ along.
The game remained scoreless through three. In the top of the 4th, the Cavaliers inning began with a Hit by pitch, a single, and then a double play tha tscored a run. By the time the game reached the 7th inning, the score was still 1-0.
In the top of the 7th, Verona began the inning with a double. The first of three runs scored on an error after a fly out to left. Another double put runners on 2nd and 3rd. The next batter scored two on a single.
In the bottom of the 7th, trailing 4-0, Utica was not ready to give up. The first two batters struck out. The next two batters doubled. One run scored. With a baserunner on 2nd, another single followed. Rather than settling for runners on the corners, the baserunner on 2nd attempted to scored and was thrown out at the plat. It wasn’t reeally even close and as the runner rounded third, I was quietely shouting to myself, “stop, stop stop”.
Final score: Verona 4 – Utica 1
