In the Saturday matinee doubleheader between the Racine Kiwanis and host Sussex Cardinals, Racine’s play could be characterized a “Jekyll and Hyde” performance. Even though Sussex won each of the games, they journey was much different.
Final scores:
Game 1: Sussex 10 – Racine 0 (5 innings)
Game 2: Sussex 15 – Racine 14
Game 1 was all Sussex. Despite expecting to be early for first pitch, the game was started an hour earlier so I missed the first inning in which Sussex had 5 batters cross home plate on four walks, two singles and a double by Lincoln Ascher.
In subsequent innings Sussex added one in the 2nd and four more in the 3rd that was capped by a Chase Galles triple.
Meanwhile, Racine got the bases loaded in the top of the first on a single and pair of walks, but could not get beyond 3rd base. For the remainder of the game the tandem of Sussex pitchers, Tyler Willie and Benjamin Jimenez, limited the Kiwanis to two more hits and no runs despite surrendering four more walks.
Game 2 was a very different story!
Racine scored 14 runs on 19 hits (16 singles, 3 doubles), and received 5 walks. Unfortunately, 9 miscues really hurt Racine (7 errors and 2 HBP)
Sussex score 15 runes on 12 hits (6 singles, 2 doubles, 2 triples, 2 home runs), and received 6 walks. Sussex contributed to the Kiwanis offense by coughing up a pair of error and hitting two batters.
This was a see-saw battle with the game tied for just three 1/2 frames, and the lead exchanged 5 times throughout the 7 inning game. Rather than walk through inning by inning, I’ll offer the scoring summary and player highlights.
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 R H E
Racine 0 2 3 1 5 3 0 14 19 7
Sussex 2 0 6 2 1 4 x 15 12 2
Racine definitely gave Sussex a challenge in game 2, but game up short.
For Racine, Malcolm Hatfield had 4 hits (double) and 4 runs scored in 5 plate appearances. Nathanyel Callis had 3 hits (double), 3 RBIs, and 2 runs scored. And Elliot Bednar had 3 hits including a double, an RBI, and a run scored. Four other player had two hits apiece, tow of which also scored a pair of runs.
The Sussex offense was led by an outstanding offensive display by centerfielder Brayden Gorecki. Brayden was 3-4 including a triple and home run, 7 RBIs, and 4 runs scored. Parker Wyatt and Lincoln Ascher were no slouches with lines of 3 hits (double, triple), 1 RBI, 3 runs scored, and 3 hits (double), 3 RBIs, and 1 run scored, respectively. Shortstop Tristan Arnold added with a solo blast.
Notes:
- Maybe I am misinterpreting something, but it doesn’t seem like players’ uniform numbers and the box score in Gamechanger is lining up. This is the third and fourth Sussex games I’ve attended and something seems amiss.
- Sussex had some form of youth movement for this game. There were at least three players who, shall we say, were on the younger side of what I’ve seen this season. With that said, they played admirably.
Lots and lots of photos from this game. There was plenty of good game action, and the light was really good. Enjoy!
