This was a great day for a ballgame. The weather was excellent with temps in the 70s and light overcast skies. There was shade to enjoy not getting baked in the sun. I enjoyed moving around the ballfield – parks with a tall fence are problematic. And while shooting through the fence behind home plate, I had a nice conversation with a couple who simply enjoy watching good baseball.
With that said, if you were a Hartland fan, you were not too happy with the end result as the Milwaukee Beavers led from the start enroute to a 17-7 victory.
Milwaukee was staked to an early lead by scoring 3 in the 1st and 2 runs in the 2nd. Other than a Scott Savage double in the 2nd, the remainder of offence was a result of singles, walks, a couple errors and a HBP. Hartland scratched together a run in the bottom of the 2nd with a walk, a single, and plays to move runners around the basepaths.
After a quiet 3rd, Milwaukee got the bats going by scoring 3 in the 4th and 4 in the 5th to take a commanding 12-1 lead. Three in the 4th came on 3 singles an walk and a double by DH Phil Reed. In the fifth, the Beavers 4 runs came as a result of two singles, two walks, and two errors. Walks and errors will kill ya.
In the 6th, the Oilers offence pulled out the big bats and plated 6 runs on 5 singles, a double by Max Martin, and a two-run home run by leftfielder Logan Schill.
After 6 in the sixth, however, the Oilers could not score any more. Meanwhile, the Beavers tacked on another 5 in the 8th by adding three from a single – single – double – single – error, and then two more after a pair of walks and passed ball.
Milwaukee notables: Joel Grunert knocked in five from two timely singles. Phil Reed had a single, double and three RBIs. And the first five batters in the lineup each had two hits apiece including doubles by Jalani Hudnall and Scott Savage. Of that bunch, Carlos Walta and Brady Schulze each scored 3 times and Hudnall and Savage scored 4 times.
Despite the score differential, Hartland also had noteworthy performances at the plate. Drew Dobberstein had three singles, an RBI and run scored. The #2 batter, Logan Schill had the home run with two RBIs, a single, and a run scored.
