In my previous post for the Blue Sox – Bulldogs matchup, I began the writeup with “This was a great ballgame!” Turns out the next day’s Sunday game between the Sauk Prairie Twins and Cazenovia Reds made for an outstanding weekend of baseball.
Besides the on field excitement, Cazenovia celebrated Fan Appreciation Day with a pig roast, and a ceremony to honor Phil Nee, who has been been broadcasting Reds games on 100.9FM WRCO radio for over 35 years. Cazenovia offers a big game experience in a small town. Pretty, pretty cool.
Game summary: Cazenovia staked themselves to an early lead, but an inning later Sauk Prairie took the lead and continued to fend off the tenacious Reds until their final at-bat in the bottom of the 10th. More specifically . . .
In the bottom of the 2nd with one out, two Cazenovia batters reached base on consecutive singles. An out later Aaron Heubsch knocked in two with a double to center.
In the top of the 3rd, scored three to take a 3-2 lead. With one out, Mike Jordahl doubled to score the previous batter who walked. An error put runners on 1st and 3rd. A double by Jackson Breunig cleared the bases.
With one out, Sauk-Prairie added a run in the top of the 4th on consecutive doubles by Grant Sorg and Joah Carlson. Carlson was stranded at 2nd when the next two batters flied out.
The Reds countered with a run in their half of the 4th when with two outs, Eli Jennings doubled and came around to score on Aaron Heubsch’s second double of the game.
In the 5th, Cazenovia tied the score when Colton Greenwood led off the inning with a hit by pitch. After two strikeouts Greenwood scored on an Issac Jennings doubled to right.
In the top of the 7th, the Twins retook the lead by scoring three. The first run scored when the inning began with singles from Mike Jordahl, Adam Ballweg, and Jackson Breunig. With one out, Tyler Prime doubled to left. On the play, Ballweg scored, Breunig was thrown out at home, and Prime advanced on the play at the plate and then scored on an error.
In the bottom of the 8th, the Reds narrowed the Twins lead when Monty Jennings doubled, Boland singled, Eli Jennings singled, and Aaron Heubsch hit a sac fly.
Trailing 7-5 entering the bottom of the 9th, Cazenovia’s chances looked grim. After a leadoff strikeout, a walk and Isaac Jennings double put runners on 2nd and 3rd. Following a flyout, Hewston Jennings doubled to left to tie the score.
After a scoreless top of the 10th, Issac Jennings was placed on 2nd to start the inning. (Editorial comment: I hate this rule.) In an attempt to move Jennings to 3rd, Marcus McCauley laid down a well-placed bunt that turned into a single. McCauley advanced to 2nd on defensive indifference. Greenwood followed with a game winning sac fly to center that scored Jennings.
Final score: Cazenovia 10 – Sauk Prairie 9.
This was a game of extra base hits. Six of the Twins 12 hits were doubles. Mike Jordahl, Jackson Breunig, and Grant Sorg each had two hits. Breunig knocked in three.
On the flipside, seven of the Reds 11 hits were doubles. The middle of the order led the hit parade with Issac and Monty Jennings getting a pair of hits apiece, and Hewston Boland had a double and two singles. Aaron Heubsch knocked in four and Boland drove in two.
