2026-08-09 Shawano Lobos at Waupaca Lakemen (DBL)

All season long, I’d hoped to drive north for a Dairyland Baseball League (DBL) and I finally got the chance in my schedule. Finding information about DBL can be a little challenging until you find team and league content on Facebook. It can be further complicated because there is a Dairy Baseball League that is part of WBA – Wisconsin Baseball Association. And, there is also the collegiate, Dairyland Collegiate League.

This was a game of pitching. Each team scored all their runs in one of their at-bats: Waupaca in the 3rd, and Shawano in the 9th. Shawano got two singles in the first, a single in the 2nd, and a Bryce Szymanski double in the 3rd. For the 4th thru 8th innings the Lobos managed just one more baserunner – a walk in the 5th.

The Lakemen produced more traffic on the basepaths, but other than the third, none of it translated into runs. In the third, Waupaca led off with a Johnny Popham double. That was followed by a pair of walks to load the bases. A fielder’s choice scored Popham. An error loaded the bases again. Another fielder’s choice and error on the play plated two more runs. Another walk and HBP loaded the bases again, but a strikeout ended the inning.

So, after 3 innings, the Lakemen led 3-0.

As already described, the Lobos didn’t produce much traffic. . . . until the 9th. Shawano wasn’t ready to give up.

Shortstop Ashton Henning led off the inning. With a 1-2 count, Ashton homered to left. On the next pitch, Chase Henning clubbed another homer to center. The next two batters flied out and grounded out respectively. Things got more interesting as Andrew Popp doubled to right. But, Shawano’s season came to an end when the next batter grounded out to the pitcher to end the game.

Final score: Waupaca 3 – Shawano 2

Admittedly, I am somewhat disappointed in myself. I don’t think I captured live action particularly well for this game. It could be due to the fact that there wasn’t alot of hitting, but I just felt amiss for this game.
